An Alphabet of God’s Attributes

I’m not sure why, but today I felt like simply publishing an alphabet of words which point to some of God’s attributes. Maybe this is an exercise a parent or teacher could do with a child.

Coincidentally, today I have been studying Psalm 37, which is an acrostic poem in the original Hebrew, meaning each stanza begins with successive letters of the Hebrew alphabet (it’s a wonderful psalm of David; please read it if you need encouragement today!)

Right, here we go.

God is an…

Architect
Builder
Creator
Developer
Entertainer
Father
Grandfather
Healer
Intelligence
Justifier
King
Light
Master
Ninja
Overseer
Planter
Quieter
Restorer
Supplier
Treasure
Usurper
Voice
Wordsmith
Xample
Youngster
Zillionaire

Okay so I was struggling with the last two letters! I went for ‘youngster’ because I had already described God as a Father and a Grandfather and I wanted to portray the idea that God is both infinitely old and infinitely young; I hope that makes some kind of sense as an indication of God’s eternality.

My choice for Z is supposed to reflect the endless riches of all of God’s attributes, rather than depicting Him as wealthy in a financial sense, of course. ‘Ninja’ is a bit of a cheeky one, I hope God will forgive the cheekiness, I’m just trying to say He is incredibly skillful 🙂

I hope you enjoyed this little exercise! I don’t want to put anyone under any obligation to give this a go themselves, but the comments are open…

  2. Good stuff, Steven. I have been using such an alphabet for years at times of prayer. X and Z are the hardest. I borrowed from Greek to make xenophiliac – a lover of strangers/aliens – and usually resort to zealous for Z. I appreciated your choice of words – many I use already but others that will inform my prayers in the future!

    1. Oh wow! That’s so awesome that you use a structure like this for prayer 😃 I absolutely love ‘xenophiliac’, I’d never have come up with that. Awesome. Zealous is great as well!

    2. I just thought of zestful… maybe?

      zest·ful
      /ˈzes(t)f(ə)l/

      1. Zestful is a really good one! But I wonder, does God have enthusiasm? I really hope so, it reminds me of this post I wrote about whether or not God finds existence exciting or tiresome.

did you mean to write “Intelligence” or “Intelligent”?

    1. Hi David! I did actually mean to write ‘intelligence’ because my A-Z was prefaced with ‘God is an…’ 🙂

  5. This is great. I usually do a gratitude list every morning with the alphabet, but this… Oh this exercise would be a phenomenal way to grow our understanding of God’s goodness. Thank you for putting this out.

    1. Hello, buddy! That is very disciplined (and positive) that you do a gratitude list every morning, such a great way to start the day 🙂 You’re most welcome, hope things are well with you, God bless you!
