I’m a huge fan of Joanna Penn’s podcast, The Creative Penn Podcast For Writers. Joanna is a self-publishing author and entrepreneur, and every week she shares news from the publishing industry as well as an interview and a personal update. It’s through Joanna’s podcast that I first became aware of Chat GPT, the generative AI engine that everyone is raving about.
Joanna sees artificial intelligence as a useful tool in her work. She uses Chat GPT to get ideas for elements of her stories and for simplifying tasks that would otherwise take a long time. She makes the point that many of the tools authors use all the time (such as autocorrect in Word, for example) use AI, and the advent of Chat GPT marks a natural evolution in this technology.
I logged onto the Ingram Spark website yesterday and noticed that when uploading a book file for publication, users are now obligated to specify whether AI was used in the composition of their book. So for some authors, AI is changing the way they create in a significant way.
There is an AI assistant built into the post settings here on WordPress now. This makes me sad. Do we really want a blogging platform full of AI-generated content? Isn’t blogging about having a personal connection with a writer and their thoughts?
I’m personally reluctant to embrace AI. I’ve never been a fan of predictive text and avoid using it wherever possible. I am steering clear of Chat GPT. I joined Meta’s social media platform Threads briefly this year, only to quickly leave again because it was becoming impossible to tell which accounts on the platform were being run by human beings and which content was AI-generated.
Using the Internet has become very confusing because of AI.
I wanted to let you know that I’m opting to avoid using AI in my writing wherever possible. So you’ll have to put up with the typos and inconsistencies that make me human. There would be little point in blogging if I was offering to my readers not my own thoughts but the thoughts of an AI.
How do you feel about the way AI is changing the Internet? Will you be incorporating AI into your writing process? Feel free to leave a comment below with your thoughts. Thank you for reading!
